Welcome to the reception year!
Reception is the final year of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage, for children from birth to five years old) and it is the first year of primary education.
Our curriculum meets the requirements of the EYFS Framework (effective September 2021 (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/early-years-foundation-stage-framework--2) and we aim to deliver high quality education where every child can progress well and grow to be a lifelong learner.
The EYFS is about how children learn, as well as what they learn. Children need well planned and inspiring opportunities to play and explore. They need to be problem solvers actively learning what to do when they encounter a problem and enjoying and celebrating their achievements. We need to equip children with the skills to develop their own ideas, makings links and creating and thinking critically. These characteristics are embedded at the heart of the EYFS at St Joseph’s and allow all children to become learners ready to move onto the next stage of their education.
While we plan our curriculum around broad titles (see our Curriculum Overview on website) our approach is broad and flexible to meet the changing needs and interests of all groups of children/individuals. We value all learning and provide a variety of teaching methods and opportunities both indoors and outdoors to ensure all children make progress from their individual staring points.
“Children learn through play, by adults modelling, by observing each other, and through guided learning and direct teaching” (Statutory Framework for EYFS 2021)
At St. Josephs’, the Gospel Values underpin our holistic and nurturing approach, and we support our children in following our School Mission Statement: ‘In the Light of Jesus, we Learn to Shine.’ We believe that every child deserves the best start in life to enable them to fulfil their true potential and we achieve this by working in partnership with parents and provide a motivating and engaging curriculum.
